Whiz-kid from Oz latest recruit to Celtic's Foreign Legionby Mikbhoy Australian kid Daniel Petkovski will arrive at Celtic Park next week for a months trial. The 17-year-old from Waitara, a suburb in Sydney’s North Shore, is the latest overseas youngster to be invited to Glasgow with a view to him joining the ever expanding foreign legion that is the club’s youth development squad today. The young player has recently come to the attention of many European clubs and Everton have been credited with a strong interest in him after being alerted by Australian international Tim Cahill who shares the same management agency. Celtic made direct contact five weeks ago and invited Daniel to the club for what will initially be a one month stay. “I guess you can say I’ll be playing with them but under trial,’’ said a clearly excited Daniel. “I was happy for my dad, he’s a big soccer fanatic.” The left-footed central midfielder began playing at the age of four with local side Northbridge Soccer Club before moving on to play for the Marconi Stallions in the NSW Premier League. In October 2008, he was part of the NSW under-15 squad which won the national championship. Following that he secured a one-year scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport, and lived in Canberra in 2009 as he continued his studies and trained twice a day for the AIS’s A-League under-20s team. His stint at the AIS also saw him become part of the Australian Joeys under-15s soccer team, with matches against Turkey around ANZAC Day being one of the highlights. It was around this time that scouts from Celtic and Everton flew to Turkey to watch him and got in touch with his agents. After the AIS, Daniel returned to school in Sydney and played for the Sydney F.C under-21 team. Petkovski hopes to impress Celtic’s coaching staff during his month in Glasgow and he’ll miss important college exams and even his graduation ceremony such is his eagerness to make the trip to Scotland. “I have no regrets,’’ he said. “If everything turns out well, then missing out on all that wouldn’t bother me.’’

Yet another project who sounds like he could be a world beater, how many is that we've signed or considered signing, don't get me wrong I'm not against bringing in youngsters, it's just that we seldom see them make the 1st team.
The last day or two it's been an Aussie, a Mexican and a Trinidadian to add to our ever bulging development squad.

The problem to me is, the local youngsters see Celtic bringing in foreign projects which puts them further down the pecking order, then when the foreign youngsters have their heads turned by agents as they approach 20 they go on to the EPL leaving us in the lurch, where no Scottish youngsters want to sign, that's the problem!

Why would they be pushed further down the pecking order just because the other bhoy is foreign? They'll be competing on a level playing field and they'll be judged on talent alone. Hopefully the cream will rise to the top whatever their nationality. Some native Scots might be pushed down the pecking order if they can't outshine a better player but that's the law of the jungle I'm afraid.

If the Scots boys are good enough they will make it no matter who is in the youth set up

With the exception of Barcelona and Arsenal, the big guns do exactly what we're doing and the majority of the kids don't make the first team. It's the diamond in the rough we're all looking for.

The rough Scottish diamonds are more likely to sign elsewhere if they see Celtic constantly bringing in foreign youngsters.

Well those particular diamonds would be showing a distinct lack of faith in their own abilities, jas. We're better off without guys who don't have the confidence to compete with the best of their peers - whatever nationality those peers may be.

Bit suprised they haven't gambled on wee Brody Patterson by now, Scottish lad who moved to Oz a few years ago and seems to be doing well in the Socceroos squad. And he's a diehard Celtic fan, as is his dad who played for the Boys Club.

The rough Scottish diamonds are more likely to sign elsewhere if they see Celtic constantly bringing in foreign youngsters. I have been involved in Youth football in Ayrshire for nealry 10yrs and the way the professional clubs treat young lads is an absolute dirsgrace ...they fill the lads heads with all sorts of pish then discard them at the drop of a hat & then they come back to the boys club team & we have to pick up the pieces of their shattered dreams ....I had one lad at an SPL club just before summer he was told to hang on a while before he would be signed ....total pish talk the club were waiting to see who Celtic & Rangers got rid of & try to get the pick of them ....this lad has now chucked the game totally hopefully he comes back when the pain of rejection eases. Pro clubs should take a good look at themselves ...I was at a course in Hampden when all the SFA were banging on about was players self esteem ....what a fecking joke
