John Hughes disappointed with Anthony Stokes' lacklustre display Published Date: 30 August 2010 By MARTIN HANNAN IF yesterday's below par performance was Anthony Stokes's final match for Hibs, then it will not be one for him to recall with fondness, according to his long-term mentor John Hughes. Hibs and Celtic were still in talks yesterday evening over the future of the striker who scored 23 goals last season and is a known target for Parkhead manager Neil Lennon. There is a considerable difference in the two clubs' valuations of StokesADVERTISEMENT , and it may not be resolved before the transfer window deadline tomorrow. The Easter Road manager is a firm fan of Stokes, and has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the Irishman, but that does not prevent him being candid about the player's lack of a showing yesterday. "I felt he was poor," said Hughes. "Perhaps it was having everything on his mind. "Sometimes you play on emotions and character, and I just felt that with the relationship that we had, if this was to be his last game he might have went out with a bang, but it didn't materialise." If Stokes stays, he may well see considerable differences in Hibs' approach, as Hughes sounded a 'back to the drawing board' message to fans. He said: "I like to play expansive football and it is good to watch, but maybe we are not as good as we think we are. "I will have a right good look and maybe I will have to start picking a team that will be hard to beat." Of the match, Hughes was in no doubt that several players let the club down yesterday: "I have seen us pass it better, but I couldn't see St Mirren scoring, though I did turn around and say 'I hope we don't get our pocket picked.' "It was a cheap goal to lose, but that's what we do - we lose cheap goals at Hibs. I felt we got outworked. I felt St Mirren were resolute, they were solid and had a good shape about them and fought for everything, while I felt we had three or four players who were not at it, and that is not acceptable, not come showtime on match day. "That's when you have to go out there and earn your bread and butter. They have let themselves down and their teammates, so hopefully we can bounce back. "The only thing you get out of football is when you put the shift in and I just felt St Mirren wanted it more and worked harder." www.scotsman.com/celticfc/John-Hughes-disappointed-with-Anthony.6501638.jp?

Reading what the internet is saying it seems that it's just a matter of us agreeing the price with Hibs.
Hopefully the price will be reasonable and we will have him signed asap. As I have said elsewhere I think he can and will score goals for us in the SPL.

Deffo looks like hes coming after this, Hibernian have snapped up former Scotland U21 international Darryl Duffy on loan from Bristol Rovers.
The striker is set to join the SPL outfit on a season-long deal.
The 26-year-old will join up with his new team-mates on Monday, as he waits for his registration and international clearance to be confirmed.
Duffy is looking forward to opening a new chapter in his career at Easter Road and is pleased to be back in his homeland.
The ex-Rangers, Falkirk and Swansea hit-man told Hibs' official website: "I am delighted to be joining Hibernian and can't wait to start training with the boys first thing this morning.
"I obviously know just how big a club Hibernian is, and have been really impressed with the training centre and the completed stadium. Excited
"I know the gaffer well, and the style he wants to play.
"I'm just very excited to be back in Scotland and am looking forward to playing in the SPL again."
Manager John Huges, who is bracing himself to lose Anthony Stokes to Celtic, said: "I know Darryl very well and he's everything you want at your football club.
"He is experienced, but I also think he's still got his best years ahead of him, and will give us more options up front.
"He loves getting in behind defenders and has scored goals wherever he has played.
"He's a great addition to the squad and I'm delighted he'll be here at Hibernian helping us push on this season."

We know that Stokes can score in the SPL. Hey, that's all we have to worry about at the moment. Works for me. I agree with you PB. As long as the price is right it will be a very good signing. I still expect us to pick up a good striker from the EPL firesale.

Latest from Sky Sports News:
Stokes: On his way to Parkhead SKY SPORTS ON SKY
Sky Sports News understands Celtic have agreed a fee with SPL rivals Hibernian for Anthony Stokes.
It is understood that the Hoops are to part with around £1.2million in order to bring the 22-year-old striker on board.
Hibs are prepared to part with the promising frontman as it has become clear that he has set his heart on a switch to Parkhead.
Once Celtic's interest became apparent, Stokes' head was turned and it was always going to be difficult to dissuade him against joining the Glasgow giants.
The former Arsenal trainee is now poised to complete a move before Tuesday's transfer deadline. Settled
Celtic will become the sixth side Stokes has turned out for in his relatively short career, with the youngster having failed to settle anywhere as yet.
He took in a loan spell at Falkirk during his time with Arsenal, which helped to bring him to the attention of Sunderland.
He struggled in the North East, though, and was farmed out to Sheffield United and Crystal Palace.
Hibernian swooped for his services in August 2009 and he bagged 23 goals in 43 appearances for the club last term.
He is already up and running in 2010/11, but appears to have notched for the last time as a Hibs player.

And STV saying he's in Glasgow for his medical:
Stokes to sign for Bhoys Fee set for striker sale

Celtic are on the verge of completing the signing of Anthony Stokes after the striker travelled to Glasgow to complete a medical. The Hibernian forward was given permission to discuss terms after the Edinburgh club reached agreement with Celtic over a transfer fee, believed to be £1.2 million.
Celtic’s interest in the former Arsenal and Sunderland striker was confirmed by Neil Lennon over the weekend and the Glasgow club entered into talks with Hibernian over a fee. An initial offer of £800,000 was reportedly rejected by Hibs chairman Rod Petrie, who demanded a substantially higher fee.
Following negotiations, the clubs have now settled on a figure and Stokes is expected to be unveiled as a Celtic player on Monday afternoon.
"He is an option and is a player we like," Celtic manager Lennon said before his side’s 4-0 defeat at Utrecht on Thursday night.
Stokes came through the ranks at Arsenal and was a huge hit while on loan at Falkirk in the 2006-07 seasno. He subsequently moved to Snuderland but failed to hold down a starting place and was sent out to Sheffield United and Crystal Palace on loan.
John Hughes brought the forward back to the SPL last summer and Stokes found his shooting boots again. The striker found the net 23 times for the Edinburgh club last season, becoming Hibs top scorer.
Celtic have been busy in the transfer market already this summer and have now made further changes in the striking department. Gary Hooper has been recruited from Scunthorpe United but is sidelined until October by injury.
Marc-Antoine Fortune was sold to West Bromwich Albion last week and Morten Rasmussen has gone out on loan to Bundesliga side Mainz meaning Lennon was keen to add more firepower to his squad.
Hibs have moved quickly to line up a replacement, drafting in former Falkirk striker Darryl Duffy on a season-long loan deal from Bristol Rovers.

SSN are still reporting a fee of £1.2m, which to me is great business, both for now and for the future. I think he is just what we need.

I think it's £1.2m and to be honest it's well worth it, Compared to who we have in Sammy and had in Fortune he will do ok for us. Stokes and Hooper are mobile and will score goals.
Hail Hail

I think he will be a good signing. For someone that knows there is no more European Football for the Mighty Hoops (for this season at least) and is keen to sign may be a sign that he sees a future at Celtic and wants to be part of that. Better option than Sammy imo. Take what we can get for Sammy and move on. Great that the site is still going. Well done to the people who did the work in getting the site up and running and organised. Cheers

CQN convinced it's a done deal too: celticquicknews.co.uk/?p=3048Celtic sign Stokes Celtic today agreed the signing of Anthony Stokes from Hibernian for a fee reportedly around £1.2m, business will be concluded within the next 24 hours. Stokes, 22, from Dublin, had the chance to join Gordon Strachan’s Celtic in 2007 after impressing at Falkirk while on loan from Arsenal but instead chose to team up with Roy Keane, then manager of Sunderland. The player then had a torrid time for the next three and a half years, making only 15 starts for Sunderland, as well as 16 on loan spells at Sheffield United and Crystal Palace. His career took off back in Scotland last season when he scored 22 times in 36 starts for Hibs, including goal of the season at Ibrox. Stokes is aged within a year as fellow new recruits, Forster, Izaguirre, Juarez, Kayal, Ledley and Hooper. Seven players with an enormous amount of potential. Welcome Anthony.

The only target left that is worth winning this season is the SPL title.
To do that we need at least one 20+ goals per season striker.
But two would be better.
Stokes has shown he can deliver those goals in the SPL.
In the short time he's been here Hooper looks as if he could, but we won't know for sure until he's played a lot more games.
We are supposed to be still after the Israeli forward, (can't remember his name) but there's nothing certain there.
So Stokes is a sensible realistic signing to make.
