SHAY GIVEN will find out over the next four months if he made the right decision to stay at Manchester City.
But Celtic might be haunted FOREVER by their failure to keep the legendary Irish goalkeeper, according to Liam Brady.
The ex-Hoops boss was the man who discovered Given and signed him up, only to see the Donegal kid dumped by Celts not long after Brady was fired in September 1993.
Now Given has 105 Republic of Ireland caps to his name and Brady feels he's one of the best keepers in Europe.
That's why Celts boss Neil Lennon was desperate to lure unsettled Given on loan from City.
But the keeper decided to stay put and Brady fears Hoops fans will never get the chance to see the superstar they let slip through their fingers play for them.
Brady, who only recently stepped down as Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni's right-hand man for the Republic, said: "Shay is one of the best keepers, not just in the English Premiership, but in European football.
"Any club would want his services and I am not surprised so many offered to take him away from Manchester City.
"I knew he had talent as soon as I saw him and that's why I brought him to Celtic.
"To this day, I still can't understand why Celtic let him go after I left. They should have had him tied up for years.
"Celtic have never had a keeper of Shay's quality in all the time he has been down in England. Certainly not for his sheer consistency.
"It's a pity Shay never got the chance to start his career at Celtic.
"He's a great fan of the club and the fans would have loved him, especially the way he has developed."
The blunder over Given in June 1994 came as the Hoops recovered after nearly going bankrupt.
New owner Fergus McCann was about to fire Brady's successor, Lou Macari - who had lasted just eight months - and move for Tommy Burns.
The power vacuum meant there was no one left at Parkhead with any clout to worry about an 18-year-old goalkeeper who had never made a first-team appearance.

Arsenal youth supremo Brady said: "Celtic let Shay's contract run out and the offer of a new one never came.
"Maybe they had other things on their mind, but it was a big mistake.
"It gave me real pleasure to see Shay do so well for the Republic and play in World Cup finals.
"I've followed his career with great interest, it's just a pity Celtic fans did not see him. I heard Celtic were interested in trying to get him to go on loan, but that was something that Shay had to sort out with Roberto Mancini.
"He obviously wants to be first-choice.
"It also helps his situation with Ireland if he's a regular with City.
"He is still in the prime of his career as a keeper and could have another six years if he stays fit.
IN MY OPINION AT THE TIME PACKY BONNAR WAS THE NUMBER ONE GOALIE AND SHAY GIVENS WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH AT THE TIME TO CLAIM THE JERSEY

Obviously Pat Bonner was no.1 but remember Shay was just a boy at the time. In hindsight we should never of let him go as he might of become a great keeper for us. I say might as, if he had stayed here, who knows how his career would of developed.

Shay Given was by far the finished article while at Celtic.Simon Smith is responsible for that and a bit of talent from Shay.I do believe simon smith is also responsible for the developement of a certain Fraser Forster.

It actually makes no never mind whether we had kept him or not, with his displays he would still be playing in the Premiership today because we would have sold him long ago. Shay still had a lot off learning to do, it is easy with hindsight to watch how Shay has developed into a fantastic goalkeeper, but had he stayed with us would he have developed the same, mibbes aye mibbes naw. There have been more than a few players showed talent whilst youngsters at Celtic, but also more than a few failed to live up to that talent. Hail Hail

In Hindsight yes, but he might not have been considered that good back in those days.
How many player's have been released as kids only to go on and be great players ?
Was Daglish not on Rangers books as a boy ?

But at this stage of his career im surprised he has stuck around at Man city, especially when he hadnt made any mistakes to warrant being kept out of the team.

Can see their point about Robbie though Mayo, that was 2 sitters missed last night, and the goal actually came because he made the wrong choice to try and beat the man and lost the ball, fortunately it fell right for the scorer. I also think Shay has made a bod move staying at City, as for when he left, he might not have been the same keeper we see today, plus if he was going to be as good we would have sold him anyhow. Hail Hail

i think the hardest part for me now is when i have to listen to lou macari commentating on how good a goal keeper he actually is when he let him go in the first place macari makes me want's to burst a brick through the telly when he's on absolute turncoat...
