From celticunderground: celticunderground.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=418%3Athe-bhoy-wonders-aboutbroken-promises-stokes-and-the-boruc-sale&catid=45%3Aseason-2010-2011&Itemid=80It’s usually one of the most exciting days of the year for a football fan, where hours upon end are wasted by keeping your eyes glued to Sky Sports News and repeatedly bashing the ‘F5’ button on various football forums, waiting for that red hot rumour to materialise. Aye, those were good days... To say Tuesday night was underwhelming is like saying we shrugged our shoulders when Porto won in Seville – it was beyond pish. Using a swear word might be a little unnecessary, but that’s just how annoyed I, and many others were, at the lack of a big signing this week. As a club, we’ve had a disastrous summer in terms of PR; many high profile players such as Sol Campbell, Jimmy Bullard and David James have knocked us back publically, Neil Lennon said after the Ross County game that many of the first team that day would not be here, but yet still are, and finally, Lennon coming out again and saying the money made from the Aiden McGeady transfer would be fully spent on the first team. Well, Neil, where has the money gone? The fans were crying out for someone like Robbie Keane to lead our front line again, or for a player who can make an attack out of nothing, like McGeady did. Instead, the money went safely into the bank and we again as fans were told complete lies from the club. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that the likes of Shaun Maloney, James Forrest and even Paddy McCourt to an extent are getting good runs in the team and performing well. But we can’t rely on those three all the time, and injuries will no doubt happen. We need that star player, the one that all the kids (and occasional man-child) want to get on the back of their tops and one who will ultimately lead the club to a league victory. We needed it, and again, we never got it. It’s not just the star player, it’s the problem area that still exists – the defence. As Utrecht showed, our defence is still the shambles that it has been for the past few years. As soon as a team is quick with the ball and puts pressure on the back four, they seem to crumble. It’s all fine and well keeping clean sheets against the likes of St Mirren and Motherwell, but when a team does have a go at us, I’m really not confident about our chances. As said previous, why wasn’t another centre back brought in? I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d be awfully frightened if Lennon had confidence in Glenn Loovens... Saying that, one positive thing that did come out of this week was the arrival of Anthony Stokes. The one thing we dreadfully lacked last season was goals, and more so against the lesser teams of the league. Stokes will score goals for us this season, and for a meagre £1.2 million, I think it’s somewhat of a bargain we got ourselves here. Looking at the bigger picture, he could be a very good player for us; he knows what’s required in the SPL, he’s a proven goalscorer, he’s only 22, he can play not only up front but on the right and behind the striker of the 4-2-3-1 that Lennon favours, and for some fans, an extra incentive is that he’s an Irish internationalist. If he keeps his head down and leaves out all the nightclub nonsense that he was involved with at Hibs, he could be a real star for us in the next few years. It was a sad day when the ‘Holy Goaly’ himself, Artur Boruc, left the club to join Fiorentina. He went to Florence presumably to be their #1 goalkeeper because Sebastien Frey was leaving. We got a derisory million or two for him, and replaced him with Newcastle’s third choice goalkeeper. Fair enough. But now the transfer window has closed, and Sebastien Frey hasn’t left Florence, and Fiorentina now have two fantastic goalkeepers at their disposal. I’m now a little mystified to why we sold Artur, as the fee wasn’t exactly ground breaking and we haven’t replaced him with a similar standard of goalkeeper. Surely he could have stayed for at least one more season and helped the team win the title back? Even if he wanted away, it would be so he could play every week, not warming the bench for someone (Which is what he will be doing at the start of this season). It’s definitely a strange one, as seeing him now brings back memories when he was in blinding form two-three years ago. He looks leaner than a 12lb steak and fitter than an Estonian bodybuilder on steroids. I love the big man, and hope he manages to become Fiorentina’s #1 this season and show Italy what he’s made of. All the best, big man..............................

did we need to replace aiden when we have a fit maloney and james forrest both showing good form?. who's to say that stokes and hooper wont score as many goals as robbie keane did for celtic?, for some the money is burning a hole in their pockets and it must be spent immeadiatly,
seemingly celtic only earned £1.65m from the europa cup last season so being out of it is no big financial loss to celtic, a loss to the fans but not too bad financially, we have money leftover from this window and i feel that if we need cash in january it will be there if needed.

And it wasn't for laxck of trying but we cannot know what went on at Celtic. And it is unfair to quote what Neil and Lawell said as if they were lying. If they treid to achieve what they said then that's ok with me, at least they tried

If they treid to achieve what they said then that's ok with me, at least they tried I agree. I honestly believe the board tried to bring in that extra bit of quality. James, Campbell, Bullard, Keane and Bellamy all turned us down. There is not much we could do about that. I am hoping that we still have a chance to bring in another defender. Danny Shittu would be ideal.

Maloney,Paddy, and Forrest will fill the Aiden role.Never thought we needed to replace him.Stokes and Hooper will score the goals Keane would have,no loss there.A CH with pace or positional sense is still a must.Hopefully a fit Rogne will fit the bill.Still would bring in Shittu,to make up the 3 CHs needed, get shot of Glenda,Hoiveld 4th pick.Spending just for the sake of it,stupid.Still dont believe some of the board though, cant help it,their record in the last 2 seasons alone has cost us £30 million in CL money. Can never forgive them for that.

Pat you are at it with this comment....nobody has mentioned replacing Aiden, the general consensus is that the board have pulled a fast one again, they haven't really brought back the thunder have they..more like passed wind. Some of these signings may prove to be good in time but they have only had two hard games one in Braga and one in Utrecht and failed miserably on both occasions. I will reserve judgement on them in the SPL until they play the huns and then we will have a better idea about their ability and bottle for the big occasion. The team that played Spartak and Arsenal last year would not have lost both those games so miserably, so when people talk about broken promises its easy to see where it comes from, we were told it would be better and at the moment that isn't the case. Out of two euro comps in august is hardly what we expected

I was totally gutted when Aiden left....but thought I'd console myself with a 'blue-chip' replacement....I must admit, I was gutted when the window closed and we didn't sign one.... However, we have signed a few 'hopefuls' and maybe one or more of them will make the step up to 'stardom'. We have now made our bed, so lets get on with it. Support the Bhoys and let's win this league.

Our new players will do fine, we have replaced Aiden with James Forrest, he can cross better, he can hit the target on more occassions, and he will set up more chances, providing he is played. Hail Hail

i have a question is aiden as good as we all say he is or is he good against average players in an average league, i watched him again in the irish international and thought he was very inconspicious again for the irish team ... i do wonder about him if he feels settled playing for ireland or should he have picked the country of his birth were i think he would feel more settled ...

No Casper, that was the Aiden we have had here for a few years now, I tend to think Aidens choice off National team is what endeared him to a large section off our support, he did have the ability, but seldom produced, but again thats just my opinion. Hail Hail

I think Forrest is a good young player but we mustn't heap too much pressure on him too soon, if he plays regularly i think he will score more than Aiden, but does he have the ability to turn defence into attack the way Aiden could? Aiden was great at taking the pressure off the back four at times but some would rather pick his faults, shooting, crossing, and as a forward player he has to expect that.

To me his biggest fault was playing with his head down. His eye was too often on the ball or his own feet, rather than looking up to see what the players round about him were doing. This leads to really nice individual play, great to watch, but is not conducive to team play and working as a unit. Great players know what is going on round about them and can do the simple things well. Aiden is a great entertainer, but not a great team player.
