Almost as funny as the Boyd/Larsson comparisons we now have this: DARREN FLETCHER claims Walter Smith is as good a boss as the great Jock Stein. The Manchester United star has revealed his total respect for the Rangers gaffer ahead of tomorrow's Champions League crunch. Scotland and Celtic legend Stein died tragically 25 years ago. Fletcher said: "If you look at the success Walter Smith has had he's one of the best managers around. "He's another great Scottish manager in terms of the overall history of our game. "In my eyes he deserves to be up there with Jock Stein and people like that. "What he's achieved at Rangers is fantastic." (From the Scottish Sun)

He must be at the wind up ahead of the CL clash. He obviously isn't going to come out and say he has a decent record in Scotland but in Europe he is continually found out because his team are pish.

I spat my Frosties out when I turned to the back page, does Fletcher not have an inkling what Jock Stein and his Lions done for the British Football game, even Fergie acknowledges that what Jock achieved is way above his own, Watty is not in the same ballpark as the both off them, when he can win titles in spite off officials and not because off them, when he can triumph in the face off adversity, but then that is something he will never need to face. I used to like you Fletch. Hail Hail

Knowing the red tops, Darren was probably fed a loaded question and couldn't really say anything else, besides that Fergie probably told him to talk shoite to these hacks.

I like manutd but I am sick of listening to D,Fletcher. First he moaned about Celtic players dropping out of scotland games no mention when rankers does it. Now this he should keep his opinions to himself and do his talking on the park against the rankers

To be fair to Fletcher though he was only one year old when Big Jock died so I suppose he's no idea at all just how much of a revolution the big man started and how much of an inspiration he was to guys like Fergie. I bet Sir Furious had a good laugh at the headline as well.

Walter's a good manager but bare in mind majority of his achievements in the 90's were BOUGHT, not WON. Celtic didn't have the financial stroke that Rangers did and it showed during that era. He went down South after that and achieved the square root of hee haw. Restored some pride with the Scottish National Team but walked out on them halfway through a campaign and then his successor did just as well as him. A run to the UEFA Cup Final with Rangers is fair cop... if sticking 10 men behind the ball and relying on sneaking an away goal and winning on penalties is your thing. While he's achieved good things with a financially crippled Rangers in recent years, you have to remember it's also been an era when our own board have made errors which have handed them a lifeline. Downsizing has cost us dear when we should have capitalised.

I feel the same and if he had answered differently the headlines the next day would have been about Fletcher sparking a war of words or something of that nature.

I will say this. Walter Smith is only a "legend" when compared to the great Paul Le Guen.
To compare him to Jock Stein is laughable. To use the 25th anniversary of Big Jock's passing as a way to write a hun feel good story and promote the waistcoat as being cut from the same cloth as Stein is poor form.

I think he may have been worked by the press into saying what they want, but then again he is not a kid he is 26/27 and will have been well schooled in dealing with the press
